Waza no Tabibito v2

You were maybe not expecting this either. Then again, I certainly wasn't.

Waza no Tabibito is a 2011 fantasy OVA. Orphan subbed it in 2011. I had quite a strong negative reaction to the show, condemning its cliched plot, cliched characters, and "uncanny valley" 3D CGI. (In fairness, I have to say that the OVA is visually stunning, with gorgeous landscapes, kinetic battle sequences, and exotic creatures.)

The translation is good, and the encode is adequate. So why a new version? It's all because of Nemesis...

Nemesis is one of Orphan's best and most reliable QCs. I can't count how many shows she's worked on. She acquired the deluxe DVD of Waza no Tabibito and discovered that it included lots of extras. She asked me to get them encoded and released. After all the work she's done for the group, I couldn't refuse. I asked a friend to encode both the OVA and the extras and commissioned a translation of the latter. This release is the result.

I won't rehash Waza no Tabibito. You can read about it in the original blog post. The main attraction back then was Kugimiya Rie, the legendary KugiRie herself, who voiced the lead, Techni-chan. The new version adds three collection of extras: the first about the characters, the second about the setting, and the third containing various promotions. The "settings" extra actually provides helpful background for understanding the show.

For example, the fish shown floating through the air are:

  • kozakana, a Japanese phrase meaning small fish
  • tobisilas, a Japanese phrase meaning flying whitebait

The other two extras are just more eye candy. They do make clear that the creator, Matsuena Shun, although best known for Kenichi: The Strongest Disciple, has strong roots in ecchi manga: all the adult female characters have massive, aerodynamically active boobs, not just Techni-chan.

Iri translated the OVA. The only change is that Fukku Rou's nickname has been changed to "Fukkun," based on official sources. ninjacloud timed. I edited and typeset. Nemesis and Topper3000 QCed the original, and Uchuu QCed this release. justj22 translated the extras. I timed and typeset them. (I didn't try to get fancy with the CGI titles.) Uchuu QCed. For both, the encode is by an anonymous friend. He wrote:

Despite being digital SD footage, the DVD source is extremely good. Only slight debanding, dehaloing, and chroma cleanup were applied. The improvements in encode settings and bitrate over the older version are most evident in high-motion action scenes towards the climax of the show. Also this encode preserves the original Dolby digital audio over the lossy re-encoded track in the original. Overall, the technical improvements are extremely modest but still observable.

So here's another chance to see Techni-chan's massive oppai defy the laws of gravity and physics while she battles the Forces of Evil (e.g., Western technology). The extras provide even more opportunities to ogle her figure, as well as Carrot's and Asami's, in revealing outfits. If that's sufficient reason to watch Waza no Tabibito again, you can get the show from the usual torrent site.
